How it works
Four steps, from estimate to switch on
There is no jargon here and there are no hidden surprises. This is exactly what happens, from the moment you finish the estimate to the day your system goes live.
Step 1
Build your estimate
You answer six quick questions about your home and the way you use electricity. At the end you pop in your details, and your guide price comes up on the screen there and then.
Step 2
A proper chat about it
Ethen or one of the team will give you a ring to talk the estimate through with you and answer anything you are not sure about. It is a conversation, not a sales pitch, and if solar is not right for your home we will say so.
Step 3
A free survey, and a fixed price
If you would like to take it further, we come out at a time that suits you and have a proper look at your roof, your electrics and how much power you actually get through. Then we put a fixed price in writing, so you know exactly where you stand before you decide anything.
Step 4
Installation, and switch on
Our team comes out and fits the system, and they clear up properly before they leave. From the moment it is switched on you are making your own electricity and using it in the house before you buy any from the grid.
The estimator only ever gives you a guide price. The only figure you are asked to say yes to is the fixed price you get in writing after the survey.

The estimate and the cost
How much does a system cost?
Our estimator uses our real price list rather than a made up figure. Solar on its own starts at £4,150 for a four panel system and runs to around £7,000 for sixteen panels. Add battery storage and it starts at about £7,250, depending on how many panels and how much storage you go for. There is no VAT to add on top: domestic solar is zero rated at the moment, so the price you see is the price you pay. The tool prices the exact system it recommends for your home.
How accurate is the guide price?
The price itself comes straight off our price list, so it is real. The savings figure is an estimate, and it is built from regional sunshine data, the size of the system and what you told us about your home. To keep the estimator short it assumes the best case for your roof, south facing with nothing shading it. If your roof faces east, west or north, or a tree or chimney shades it, your real figure will be lower, and the survey is where we measure that properly and turn the guide price into a fixed price.
Is the survey and quote really free?
Yes. We come out, look at the roof, look at your electrics and give you a fixed price in writing. There is no charge for that and no obligation at the end of it.
The kit we fit
What panels do you use?
Trina Solar Vertex S+ 450W all black panels. They carry a 25 year product warranty and a 30 year performance warranty, so the manufacturer is still standing behind them three decades in.
What about batteries and inverters?
We fit SolaX Triple Power T-BAT D53 battery modules, 5.3kWh each, and you can have one, two or three of them. Those run with a SolaX X1 Hybrid G4 inverter. If you go without a battery you get the SolaX X1 Boost G4 instead.
Do I actually need a battery?
No, and plenty of people start without one. A battery earns its keep if the house is empty during the day, because it stores what the panels make while nobody is in and gives it back to you in the evening instead of you buying it off the grid. If somebody is home all day using the power as it is generated, the case for one is weaker. The estimator lets you try it both ways.
How much maintenance do they need?
Very little. There are no moving parts on a panel and the rain does most of the cleaning. The inverter is the part most likely to want attention over the years. Panels quietly get on with it.
Your roof and your home
Do I need planning permission?
For most houses in Wales, no. Roof panels count as permitted development as long as they sit no more than 200mm off the roof surface and do not stick up above the ridge. Listed buildings do need permission, and conservation areas need it if the panels would be visible from the road. Some properties have had their permitted development rights removed, which is worth checking. We will tell you at the survey if yours is one that needs an application.
Which way does my roof need to face?
South is the best you can do. South east and south west come in at about 95 per cent of that, and east or west at about 85 per cent, which is still well worth doing. North facing on its own is not. The estimator asks which way yours faces and adjusts the numbers rather than pretending every roof is the same.
Will they work in Welsh weather?
Yes. Panels run on daylight, not direct sunshine, so they still generate on a grey day, just less than on a bright one. You will make most of your electricity between March and September and noticeably less in the middle of winter. The estimator uses real South Wales sunshine figures rather than a national average.
What about shade from trees or a chimney?
It matters, and we would rather know about it up front than pretend otherwise. Heavy shade can knock roughly a fifth off what a roof produces, which is why the estimator asks. At the survey we look at where the shade actually falls and design around it.
Money and paperwork
Can I sell electricity back to the grid?
Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee. Your supplier pays you for whatever you send back. Rates vary a lot between suppliers, so it is worth shopping around for an export tariff once your system is on. Our estimator assumes 15p a unit.
Will they work in a power cut?
Not on their own. For safety a solar system shuts itself down in a power cut so it cannot push electricity into the network while engineers are working on it. Some battery setups can be wired to keep a few circuits alive, so say if that matters to you and we will talk it through at the survey.
Are you properly certified?
Yes. We are NICEIC approved, enrolment number 611086000, and MCS certified under NIC-200254. We are TrustMark registered as well. The MCS one is the certificate your energy supplier will ask to see before they will pay you for exported electricity, so it is not just a badge.
